When are you considered a student worker?

Would you like to work as a student and gain valuable experience at the same time? There are a few conditions you must meet in order to be eligible for a student contract.

  • Age: You must be at least 15 years old.

  • Studying as your main activity: You must be enrolled at a recognized educational institution and be following a full-time course of study. Your student job remains an additional activity alongside your studies.

  • Restrictions: Students who attend evening classes or have a limited curriculum with less than 27 credits are not eligible. In these cases, studying is not considered a main activity.

If you meet these conditions, you can start working as a student employee and enjoy the benefits of a student contract.

No taxes
As long as your annual income remains below €15,100 gross (after deduction of social security contributions), you do not pay any taxes on your income. However, you are still required to file a tax return.

Working with a limit

You may work a maximum of 650 hours per calendar year as a working student at a reduced social security contribution rate. You can spread these hours over the entire year. If you work more than 650 hours, you will pay the normal social security contributions from the 651st hour onwards. Working too much can also cause you to temporarily lose your right to the Groeipakket (child benefit).

You can easily check how many hours you have left to enjoy the reduced social security contributions via the online service My Student@work and the Student@work app.

After your studies

Once you have graduated and no longer have any obligations towards your school, you are no longer allowed to work as a student employee. There is, however, one exception: if you graduate in June or during the summer months, you may continue working under a student contract until 30 September of that same year.

Please note that a student job may not serve as a trial period for a permanent position. This applies regardless of whether you are already registered with the VDAB as a job seeker during that period.
